You wouldn't buy a dog and try to turn it into a cat. It's unfortunate that the author bought a donkey because of the traits she admired in the creatures and then tried to change its innate nature. Had she loved and accepted him as the affectionate, playful creature he was instead of taking him to assorted people to "break" and train him, he could have been spared some frightening and painful experiences--like being whipped by a woman trained in "humane" methods. I felt sorry for this innocent creature too because his owner, the author, was busy and preoccupied with work and didn't spend as much time with him as he deserved. Eventually things worked out, but in the meantime he suffered for her lack of understanding. You can't train a tiger or elephant to perform in the circus for human entertainment and know the true nature of the animal. This book left me feeling bad for the donkey and angry at the owner/author. Since I have a farm with many kinds of animals, I was anxious to learn about the author's experience with her beloved donkey. The moral I out got out of the book is - don't own a donkey, especially if you are not a horse person (I'm not). Anyone with a romantic idea about how lovely a donkey can be will quickly be disabused of that notion. I thank the author for her honesty and tenacity in remaining loyal to her animal.
